Tincombe’s Hibernaculum

Tincombe Park Now has a Hibernaculum.

Hibernaculum is Latin for ‘tent for winter quarters’ In this case we are aiming at creating an amphibian hibernation habitat.

DUG BELOW THE GROUND TO TRY AND GET BELOW THE FROST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THEN WE BUILT UP WITH PALLETS (JUST LIKE AN UNDERGROUND BUG HOTEL) AND STUFFED THEM WITH TWIGS AND STONES. THIS CREATES CREVICES FOR AMPHIBIANS TO HIDE AND A HAVEN FOR BUGS (WHICH THE AMPHIBIANS FEED OFF).

There are strategically placed pipes which allow the frogs and toads to enter. A drain was dug out to allow water to run away. I’ve created a video for you to see just how it was done!

Thanks to all the hard work which was put in to this (especially the digging). Thanks to today’s team – JasperGrenville SladeJimmy helperLiz LloydLesleyKimberley Dawn and Barrie Taylor.

Also I would like to thanks South West Surfacing for supplying the pallets (Thanks Wayne Hambly) and to Chris Haverson for supplying and cutting pipes.
